Daniel goes to the Orchid to convince Pierre Chang to evacuate the island, more journal pages

Daniel and Miles are sitting in front of the Orchid station construction site as Daniel looks through his journal. Pierre Chang arrives in one of the vans and Daniel says "Right on time." Daniel heads towards the Orchid after Pierre goes in.

As Daniel is on the elevator going underground, he is reading his journal (you can see some enhanced shots of the journal pages below). Once he reaches the underground Orchid station, it becomes clear that we are seeing Daniel's point of view of the opening scene of season 5 (see the screens here). He bumps into Pierre Chang and goes to where the workers had been drilling.

Daniel runs back through the tunnel to talk to Pierre and he reminds him that they met three years ago when he arrived at the barracks with LaFleur (Sawyer). Daniel tells Pierre to order the evacuation of every man, woman and child on the island. He continues saying that the drilling at the Orchid unleashed some electromagnetism. Pierre tells him that it's now contained. Daniel says that it's contained there, but in about six hours at the Swan station site, that the same thing is going to happen and the energy there is about 30,000 times more powerful. He says the accident is going to be catastrophic. Pierre asks what qualifies Daniel to make such a prediction. Daniel tells him "I'm from the future."

Outside of the station, Daniel is still trying to convince Pierre to do what he says, but Pierre thinks that Daniel is just mocking him because he overheard him mention time travel. Daniel asks Pierre to look at his journal where there are equations that won't be written for another 20 years. Miles who overheard the mention of Daniel being from the future comes over and tells Pierre that he thinks Daniel had too many drugs on the submarine trip. Daniel interrupts and tells Pierre that Miles is his son. Daniel points out that a Chinese man named Miles shows up with him from the future and asks if he really thinks it's a coincidence. Pierre asks Miles if what Daniel says is true and Miles denies that it is. Pierre then tells Daniel to stay away from him.

Miles pulls Daniel away and asks him what he's doing. Daniel says that he's just making sure that Pierre is doing what he is supposed to do. Miles asks what that is and Daniel just says "You'll see."

So Daniel seems to be on a path to make sure that the island is evacuated before "the incident" occurs and he's willing to play every card he has to make sure that it happens. Also, is the pocket of energy below the Swan the same type of energy that is below the Orchid? If so, is there some ancient ruins or something similar to the donkey wheel below the Swan site? It would seem that Pierre might actually believe some of what Daniel was saying. If one person would believe that Daniel and Miles could be from the future, it would be Pierre.

Sawyer shows Jack that Phil is being held captive in a closet

Back at the barracks, Daniel asks Miles to take him to the Orchid station immediately. They jump in a Dharama jeep as Jack comes outside to question Daniel what he meant when he said that his mother was wrong. Daniel tells Jack that he has a errand to run and he'll be right back.

Jack goes to Sawyer's house and tells him that Daniel came back to the island on the submarine and came to his house and started talking nonsense. Sawyer tells Jack that he'd "love to trade theories about this" but he's busy right now. Jack asks him what he's busy with at 6 o'clock in the morning. Juliet tells Sawyer to tell Jack. Sawyer tells Jack to come inside and he tells Jack that Phil has a video of himself and Kate taking Ben to the hostiles. Sawyer tells Jack that the tape is with Phil and Jack asks where Phil is. Sawyer opens a closet and we see Phil bound and gagged on the floor. Sawyer introduced Phil and Jack.

Eloise Hawking sets Daneil on his path to become a physicist

In a flashback, we see a young Daniel Faraday playing a piano. A middle aged Eloise Hawking comes in and sits next to Daniel. She asks him if he knows what destiny means and he says "no." She tells him that when one has a special gift, it must be nurtured and she then stops the metronome on the piano. She asks him how many beats the metronome has counted since he started playing. He answers "864." She then tells Daniels that his gift is his mind that is meant for science and mathematics. Eloise tells him that it's her "job" to keep him on the right path. She tells him there is no more time for distractions as looks at the piano. Daniels says that he can do both and says "I can make time." Eloise says "If only you could."

I love that Daniel says "I can make time." Little does Eloise know that later in life, he will in many ways, learn to do just that. The big question lingering here is how does Eloise Hawking know what path people should take in their lives and how does she have this ability?

Daniel tells Jack that he was not supposed to come back to the island

We return to where we left off at the end of "Some Like it Hoth." Daniel arrives on the submarine with the Ann Arbor scientists. Pierre Chang speaks to the scientists while Miles asks Daniel why he's there. Miles says he figured that Dan got rich once he left by inventing the DVD or something. Daniels pulls out a photocopy of the new Dharma recruits photo with Hurley, Jack and Kate and says that it's why he's there. Daniel asks Miles to take him to Jack immediately.

Jack wakes up to knocking at his door and when he opens it, Daniel comes in and immediately asks how he got back to the island. Jack asks Dan where he's been and Dan tells him that he was at Dharma headquarters in Ann Arbor doing some research. Daniel then repeatedly asks a groggy Jack how he got back to the island in 1977. Jack says that they were on a plane and Daniel interrupts and asks who told him to get on a plane. Jack tells him that it was Daniel's mother, Eloise Hawking. Daniel asks if his mother convinced Jack to get on the plane by telling him it was his destiny. Jack says that exactly what she said. Daniel says "Well I've got some bad news for you Jack. You don't belong here at all. She was wrong."

Desmond is rushed to the hospital, Eloise Hawking visits Penny

In the opening scene of "The Variable" we see Desmond being rushed into the hospital on a gurney after being shot by Ben. Penny is following the medical workers carrying little Charlie Hume. A paramedic says that he's crashing and a doctor tells Penny that she'll have to stay there and wait for news. Charlie calls out for his daddy.

Later, in the waiting room, Charlie is sleeping on a couch as Penny looks over him. Ms. Eloise Hawking slowly walks into the room and asks Penny how old her son is. Penny tells her that he's two and Eloise says that he has his father's hair. Penny says "I'm sorry, do I know you?" Eloise tells her that she knows Desmond and that it is her son's fault that Desmond was shot. Penny asks "You son is Benjamin Linus?" and Eloise replies "Good lord no" in an offended tone. Eloise then tells Penny that her son is Daniel Faraday.

It seems pretty weird that there was no visible bullet wound when Desmond was shot in "Dead is Dead" and he was able to beat the crap out of Ben, but know he's seriously wounded and crashing. It's a little thing though.

Why exactly has Eloise Hawking come to the hospital to talk to Penny? Is she really sorry for setting the events leading to Desmond being shot in motion or is this the start of an attempt to get Desmond back to the island?

Daniel Faraday returns to the island with the scientists on the submarine

At the pier where the submarine is docked, Miles is helping unload luggage from the sub. Behind him further up the pier, Stuart Radzinsky and Pierre Chang seem to be checking in the Ann Arbor scientists. Someone coming out of the sub puts a suitcase on the outside the port and asks for a hand with it. Miles comes over to help, picking up the suitcase then stopping when he see Daniel Faraday emerge from the submarine. Miles says in a shocked tone "Dan." Daniel says "Hey Miles. Long time no see." And that's it.

So how long was Daniel off of the island and how did he manage to come back with the Ann Arbor scientists? Hopefully we'll get to find that out in the upcoming episode titled "The Variable."
