Locke reveals the accident to Jack, recognizes Jin + Jack triggers Locke's island memories

At St. Sebastian Hospital, Locke is being pushed down the hall in a wheelchair by an orderly. As Locke is telling him that his fiance Helen is picking him up, Jin walks down the hall with flowers. Locke is distracted as he looks at Jin as if he recognizes him. Locke then tells the orderly he can take it from there and continues on his own.

At that moment Jack walks up the hall to meet Locke. Jack says that he wants to say goodbye and they shake hands. Then Jack's demeanor changes as he tells Locke that he went to see Anthony Cooper with the hope of understanding why Locke didn't want the surgery.

Locke is clearly upset, but proceeds to tell Jack that he was in a plane crash. He had his private pilot's license for a week and begged Anthony to be his passenger on his first flight, even though he was afraid of flying. He says that they were barely off the ground and he doesn't remember what went wrong, but it was his fault that the man he loved more than anything would never walk or talk again.

Jack recalls the moment they met at LAX when Locke told Jack his father was gone. Jack tells Locke that his father is gone too. Locke objects, saying that he's not gone, but Jack tells him that he can punish himself as long as he wants, but it's never going to bring him back. Jack adds "What happened, happened, and, you can let it go." Certainly a familiar phrase coined by Daniel Faraday.

Locke asks what makes him think letting go is so easy and Jack says it's not and he has difficulty doing it too. He says that he was hoping that Locke could go first with a slight smile. Locke pauses then laughs and then tells Jack goodbye and starts down the hall.

Before Locke turns the corner, Jack says "I can help you, John. I wish you believed me." That's same statement was the sole line of Locke's suicide note and Locke said it earlier in the episode when he was asleep. Locke is stopped by the line and it clearly struck a nerve with him, but after a moment he leaves without saying anything else.

This was one of the deepest conversations between Jack and Locke we've seen. The question is, why does Locke clearly seem to recognize things from the original timeline, but chooses to ignore them? Or is he ignoring them? Has he had a flash like Desmond or Hurley and seen something that he didn't want to see?

Claire shows Jack a music box she received in Christian's will

Jack sees Claire at the hospital while he's visiting Locke. She has come to talk to him and they go to a waiting area where Jack gets an Apollo candy bar from a vending machine.

Claire tells Jack that she never met Christian, which is different from the original timeline, and she opens a box containing a music box. She says that the lawyer, Ilana, said there would be more that was left to her in Christian's will, but he specifically wanted her to have her the music box.

Claire asks how Christian died, and Jack reveals that he was found in an alley outside a bar in Sydney and that he drank himself to death. Jack tells her that he flew to Sydney to get the body and they airline lost it, prompting Claire to tell him that she just flew in from Sydney. Jack asks when and when she says Wednesday, he asks "Oceanic 815?," which she obviously confirms. Jack is stunned once again.

Jack asks to look at the music box, and when he opens it, it plays "Catch a Falling Star," the same song from Claire's childhood and the one she wanted to be sung to Aaron, which Kate did off the island. There's a moment where they are both looking into a mirror built into the lid of the box, continuing the mirror trend from the flash sideways stories.

Jack then asks Claire to come stay with him since they are family. They both smile and seem quite happy about their worlds coming together.

Locke mentions 'the button' & the words from his suicide note in his sleep

Jack is standing over Locke, who is asleep in his hospital bed. Locke groans and Jack asks if he's awake. Without opening his eyes or seeming to wake up at all, Locke says "push the button." Then he says "I wish you had believed me," the words from the suicide note he wrote to Jack. Jack looks completely stunned by what Locke says.

So Locke is clearly remembering things from the original timeline, at least in his subconscious. The question is, how much has he already remembered up to now?

Locke refuses Jack's offer to fix his legs, Helen visits

Locke is awoken by Jack at St. Sebastian hospital after the surgery. Locke looks confused and says "I know you." Jack reminds him that they were both on Oceanic 815 and met in the lost luggage office. He continues telling Locke that his dural sac was ruptured when he was run down by a car. Jack tells him that everything is back where it belongs.

Jack then gets more serious and tells Locke that he got a look at his initial spinal injury during the surgery and asks how it happened. Locke asks him why he wants to know and Jack says "Because I think you're a candidate." Expanding on that, he says that there's a new surgery that may be able to restore feeling to Locke's legs and he may even walk again. Jack repeats his old mantra saying "I think that... that I could fix you."

Locke pauses for a moment and simply says "No. Thank you." Jack tells him that there is minimal risk, but Locke interrupts him, stating more firmly "I said no, doctor."

At that moment Helen comes into the room and hugs and kisses Locke. It's the first time she's seen him since the surgery. She then notices Jack, who introduces himself. She runs over and gives him a hug and a kiss on the cheek. As she's hugging him Jack and Locke smile at each other, but Jack is clearly still baffled by Locke's refusal of his help.

Jack goes into surgery & discovers Locke is his patient

Jack and David arrive at St. Sebastian Hospital and as they're walking through the hall, David asks if Jack really had no idea he had a half sister, Claire. Jack says that he didn't know and that Christian kept a lot of things to himself. David asks Jack if that's where he got that trait from and he says probably. David agrees to wait for Jack until he's done with the surgery and then wishes his dad good luck.

As Jack scrubs up, a female surgeon tells him that the patient was hit by a car and had a pre-existing spinal condition before the incident with Desmond's car. Jack looks at the screen and says that the dural sac is obliterated. The female surgeon says that is the reason why they called Jack, because they were in over their heads. Jack confidently says "Yeah, I got this."

Inside the operating room, Jack moves over to the patient and prepares to make the first incision. Jack looks down at a mirror attached to an operating table and sees the reflection of John Locke and looks a bit stunned. He says "I think I know this guy."

This is the moment we've been waiting for in the sideways when Locke and Jack's paths cross again. The result of this crossing is for the next episodes' posts.

Jin tells Sun that she & the baby are okay at St. Sebastian Hospital

Sun wakes up in a room at Saint Sebastian Hospital and finds Jin asleep in a chair next to the bed holding her hand. She wakes him up and he tells her that she was shot and that she and the baby are okay. They both smile at each other.

Sun is frightened of Locke when they arrive at St. Sebastian's

In the flash sideways Locke is in an ambulance with a paramedic and Ben being rushed to the hospital. Ben tells the paramedic that Locke is a paraplegic, but he doesn't know anything else about him. Ben says that he saw the man who hit Locke and the paramedic says that he can talk to the police at the hospital.

Ben says he doesn't know who to contact for Locke, when Locke weakly says the name Helen Norwood. He also says that he was going to marry her. Ben tells Locke that he'll still marry her because he's going to be okay.

Once they arrive at the hospital, an ambulance carrying Sun and Jin arrives too. Sun and Locke are wheeled in right next to each other when Sun looks over and sees Locke. Sun freaks out, repeating "It's him!"

So it seems that Sun has had a vision of the original timeline, since she recognizes Locke and is afraid of him. It's all seems to be coming together now.

Desmond crosses paths with Jack at St. Sebastian's, Charlie makes a break for it

Desmond tries with no luck to find out where Charlie is from a nurse when Jack walks by. Desmond recognizes him from the plane and asks Jack for help finding Charlie. Jack seems unconvinced that someone from the plane ended up at this hospital, when Charlie tears down the hall past them trying to make an escape.

Desmond takes off after Charlie and finally corners him in a waiting area. Charlie says that he's running because no one at the hospital can help him. He also says that he wasn't trying to kill Desmond, he was trying to show him something. Desmond grabs Charlie's hands, presumably looking for the message "Not Penny's Boat" written on them, but it's obviously not there.

Desmond then asks Charlie who Penny is, but Charlie doesn't know. Charlie tells him that he's not going to play the rock show because "none of this matters." He says "All that matters is that we felt it." As Charlie leaves, he tells Desmond that he should go find Penny.

Desmond has flashes of Penny & Charlie during M.R.I.

At the St. Sebastian's Hospital, Desmond is being asked a series of questions by the doctor. When she asks if he's having hallucinations, he hesitates and says he's not sure if he's had hallucinations. The doctor says that his C.A.T. scan was inconclusive and she's going to send him downstairs to get an M.R.I. He objects, wanting to find Charlie, but she insists on the M.R.I.

Downstairs, the M.R.I. technician asks him if he has any keys or change, echoing what one of Widmore's men asked him before putting him into the electromagnetic box. The technician warns him that the machine will be loud and gives him earplugs. He also gives Desmond "the button," which he should push if he needs to stop the machine. Desmond seems to respond to the term "the button," possibly having a recollection of the button in the Swan Station he pressed every 108 minutes.

Once the machine starts, it seems that the electromagnetism of the M.R.I. triggers a response in Desmond causing him to see a vision Charlie's "Not Penny's Boat" message again as well as many images of Penny and his son Charlie. As he sees Penny and his son, Desmond gets emotional and suddenly starts pressing the emergency button and screams to be let out of the machine. He rips off his restraints and goes to find Charlie.

Locke ends up at St. Sebastian's, Jack angered by mention of Christian

Locke wakes up in Saint Sebastian's Hospital with Jack sitting next to his bed. Jack immediately asks Locke what he is doing there. Locke was taken to Jack's hospital after his car crash. Locke tells Jack "We have to go back" and Jack, who has obviously been drinking plays it off briefly and then gets angry. Locke tells Jack that someone was trying to kill him because they don't want him to succeed. Jack asks Locke if he has ever considered that the idea that he's special is just a delusion. Jack continues saying "Maybe you are just a lonely old man." As Jack gets up to leave, Locke says "Your father says hello" which stops him in his tracks. Locke tells him how Christian told him to move the island and bring everyone back. This gets to Jack whose eyes get watery as he says "My father is dead." Locke replies "Well, he didn't look dead to me." Locke tells Jack again that he has to come back and that he is only person who can convince the others to come back too. Jack gets angrier saying that they were never important and to leave and the others alone. As Jack storms out, it is clear that Locke is distraught.

This was another classic science vs. faith stand-off between Jack and Locke. The mention of Christian Shephard clearly gets to Jack because at this point he started growing the beard meaning that he has already been seeing Christian (screens here and here from "Something Nice Back Home"). Jack has also seems to have starting drinking and/or taking pills at this point because he slurs his speech at one point.

Jack takes Sayid to St. Sebastian

Jack takes Sayid to St. Sebastian Hospital and hooks him up to monitors and gives him oxygen. It's worth noting that the oxygen tank is in the red and needs to be refilled. This seems to be mistake with the prop. Anyway, it appears that Jack gives Sayid a shot of adrenaline which wakes him up. Sayid freaks out and tries to choke Jack before he realizes who it is. Sayid immediately asks about where Hurley is, if anyone else is there and if anyone else knows he's there.
