Daniel tells Desmond how to find Penny, shows him quantum mechanics in journal

Desmond returns to the limo to have a drink after his discouraging conversation with Eloise Hawking. As he's telling Minkowski to just drive around, Daniel Faraday (known here as Daniel Widmore) knock on his window and asks for a talk.

First, Daniel asks Desmond if he believes in love at first sight and proceeds to tell him about the girl he saw at the museum with blue eyes who was eating a chocolate bar. Right away, we know he's talking about Charlotte. He says that when he saw her, it was like he already loved her.

He says that's when thing got weird and later that night he woke up and wrote a complex quantum mechanics equation in his journal. In this timeline, he's a musician, not a physicist, so he had to take it a friend to find out that only someone who had been studying physics their entire life could write the equations.

He then explains that if something terrible is about to happen and the only way to stop it would be to release a large amount of energy, like setting off a nuclear bomb. He says that what if their current life is not supposed to be their life and that somehow they changed things. He believes that he may have already set off a nuclear bomb.

Desmond is just confused and doesn't understand what any of this has to do with him until Daniel mentions Penny. Daniel tells Desmond that he felt love and that's why he's looking for Penny. He then reveals that Penny is his half-sister and can tell Desmond exactly when and where to find her.

So, Daniel seems to have had a fairly significant vision of the original timeline, though he doesn't discuss the specifics. But he is able to push Desmond into a direction which may push the two timelines closer together.

Caesar plunders through the Hydra Station office, Ilana interrupts

This week's episode started with a mysterious scene in a dark office which we later learn is an office in the Dharma Initiative's Hydra Station. Caesar is rummaging through the office and finds a Life magazine from April 19, 1954 with a cover story about hydrogen bomb tests. He then breaks open a file cabinet and pulls out a file folder. The folder contains a copy of a page from Daniel's journal (photos 17 and 18: we saw this page in the journal in "The Constant") and an updated version of the map Daniel and Charlotte used to find The Tempest (photos 15 and 16: we saw this map in "The Other Woman") . it also contains one of the maps of the island that Danielle Rousseau had (photos 13 and 14).

Caesar then finds a loaded gun under the desk and puts it in his bag. Ilana walks in and asks what he put in the bag and Caesar lies and pulls out a flashlight which he tosses to her. She then tells him that someone named Roxanne was scouting just south of where they are and found a man standing in the water wearing a suit. We learn moments later that the man was John Locke. More on that in the next post.

So when are they on the island and how long have they been there? They know each other's names and are already scouting the island, so how much time has passed since they got to the island? Also, what is Caesar up to and why is he hiding a gun? It feels a bit like the secrets kept between the 815 surivivors in the first few seasons.

Daniel's notes about The Orchid

Daniel Faraday opens up the helicopter feed with the satellite phone and hears Keamy say they're headed to the Orchid station.

Daniel rushes to get his notebook where we see he has notes about the Orchid. He has the Dharma logo drawn on the same page as some formulas as well as the notes "TIMELIKE FACTOR" and "Space Like FACTORS." One note also says "Possible!." Another page of notes says "Using Eddington Finklestein coordinates (V,R) removes the singularity at R=Zm (or R=2m). As R gets smaller - light cones tip over."

In a panic, he then tells Charlotte "We have to get off this island, right now." Daniel knows about the Orchid and knows how dangerous it is.

Daniel Faraday's journal

Here is Daniel's journal. There's a lot of physics related information. Here's a list of some of the things mentioned:
  • Imaginary time
  • Space-time interval
  • Object at light speed
  • Real space
  • Real time
  • Imaginary space
In the last screens, you'll see that Daniel wrote "If anything goes wrong, Desmond Hume will be my constant."
