Locke slits Zoe's neck, Ben shoots Widmore

At Ben's old house at the barracks, Ben leads Locke into the house and tells him that Charles Widmore and Zoe are inside and that Zoe is armed, but he assumes that doesn't matter dealing with smoke monster Locke. Locke tells Ben to wait outside because he doesn't need to see what's going to happen, but Ben says that he wants to see it.

As they Locke enters the room, he says to Widmore that it's nice being able to talk without the fences. He asks Zoe who she is and as she's answering, Widmore tells her not talk to him. Locke swiftly pulls out his knife and slits her throat. She falls to the floor, bleeding and quickly dies. Widmore asks him why he killed her and Locke says that since he told her not to talk to him, that made her pointless.

Locke then tells Widmore that if he doesn't tell him what he wants to know, then the first thing he'll do when he leaves the island is kill his daughter Penny. Widmore says that he'll kill her either way, but Locke gives him his word that he won't if he cooperates.

Widmore then tells him that he brought Desmond Hume back to the island as a "last resort," then says that he won't say anymore in front of Ben. Locke tells him to whisper it and as Widmore leans in a whispers, Ben fires three shots, killing Widmore. Ben says "He doesn’t get to save his daughter!" Locke says that Ben never ceases to amaze him and adds that Widmore had already told him what he needs to know. Ben says that's good and asks "Did you say there were some other people to kill?"

So Ben finally got what he wanted by killing Charles Widmore, apparently forgoing whatever rules they were playing by that were addressed in "The Shape of Things To Come" in season 4. Ben certainly seemed to let his jealousy surface again, making another rash decision. He certainly doesn't like the idea of Jacob talking to Widmore and not him. This jealousy is what led to Jacob's death.

Smoke monster takes out Richard, Locke makes a deal with Ben

Locke arrives on the main island and sees Zoe and Widmore's gear in an outrigger canoe. He looks at in for a moment then moves on.

The the barracks, Zoe arrives and tells Widmore that they need to go. Widmore tells them that they are going to hide in Ben's secret room. Ben says that he's not going to hide because Locke's going to find him sooner or later.

Miles says that he's going to survive by running through the jungle, but before he leaves, Ben asks for Widmore and Zoe's walkie talkies and gives one to Miles. Before Widmore goes into the secret room, he tells Ben that Locke is going to kill him. Ben says "Then I guess this is goodbye."

Richard then decides that he's going to talk to Locke, since all he wants is for him to join him. As Richard and Ben slowly walk outside, they suddenly hear the sound of the smoke monster approaching. In one motion, the smoke monster catches Richard by the neck and tosses him off into the distance.

Ben is stunned, but slowly sits down in a chair in front of his old house. Locke appears and sits down next to him, ominously playing with his knife. He says that Ben is who he was looking for and Ben offers him some lemonade. Locke tells Ben that he wants him to kill some people, and if he does, he can have the island after he leaves.

Ben hesitantly agrees and then after Locke asks whose outrigger is down at the dock, Ben tells him it's Widmore's. When Locke asks where Widmore is, Ben gives it up that they're hiding in his closet.

We're left wondering the fate of Richard, who is not seen for the rest of the episode. We also don't see Miles again. Ben was quick to give up Widmore to Locke, but Widmore is certainly the one person Ben has no interest in forgiving.

Widmore says Jacob told him to come to the island, Locke is coming

Ben continues to hold a gun on Charles Widmore and asks what he's doing there. Widmore brushes him off telling him to put down the gun and telling Zoe to go the equipment from the outrigger and then sink it. Ben says not to go anywhere, but Widmore says that if he shoots him, his last chance of survival will be gone. He then tells Zoe to go because Ben won't shoot her. She slowly walks out as Ben stands there.

Widmore turns to Richard and asks why they are there and Richard reveals their plan to blow up the Ajira plane. Widmore says that he's had the plane rigged with explosives since they got there and that as usual, he's three steps ahead of Ben.

Ben then asks Widmore how he returned to the island and Widmore reveals that Jacob invited him back. He says that Jacob visited him after the freighter was destroyed and showed him the error of his ways and shared with him the information he needed to know when he returned to the island.

Zoe then interrupts on the radio to tell Widmore that Locke has arrived on the main island in an outrigger. Wimore tells her to get back quickly and tells everyone that they need to hide if they don't want to die.

So Jacob brought Widmore back to the island which explains why he knew the candidates names and the other information he possesses. Ben is certainly not happy that Widmore has seen Jacob since Ben was ignored by him for so long. We see jealousy inside Ben stirring again.

Ben, Richard & Miles get C-4 from the barracks, discover Widmore & Zoe

We finally see Ben, Miles and Richard again, making their way through the jungle towards the barracks. Miles questions whether Ben's short cut is accurate and Ben says he lived at the barracks a long time and he knows how to get there. Mile hits back saying he lived there 30 years ago, "otherwise known as last week." It's nice to see a little humor return to the show.

Once they arrrive at the barracks, Miles starts getting that dead body feeling and says that he get "wonky around dead stuff." Ben asks him if he has something to share and before Miles can say anything, Richard says that Alex is buried there. He says that he buried Alex's body after Ben left the island. Ben pauses and looks down at the ground then thanks Richard.

They then enter Ben's old house where he immediately moves the bookcase, revealing his secret room. Miles notices the door where Ben summoned the smoke monster and asks what it is. Ben says that it is where he was told he could summon the smoke monster, but he now knows that it was really summoning him.

Behind the hanging shirts, there is a safe that Ben opens to reveal six bricks of C-4. Ben asks Richard if they want to cripple the plane or "blow it to hell," and Richard chooses the latter, so they take a six bricks.

They suddenly hear a noise, and leave the room to discover Zoe in the kitchen. They point their rifles at her and Ben asks who she is. Then Charles Widmore enters house and says that she' with him. Ben looks completely stunned to see Widmore.

Sawyer & his group are locked in the Hydra cages

At the Hydra Station, Widmore's team are setting up the portable sonic fence pylons next to the cages as Seamus and the others march Sawyer's group to them. When Seamus order Sawyer into the cage, he refuses to go back in there. Sawyer takes Seamus' gun and turns the tables, but Charles Widmore shows up and fires a gun into the air, then points it at Kate (a familiar scenario resembling season 3).

Widmore informs Sawyer of something he already knows. Widmore says that he has a list of names including Ford, the Knows and Reyes, but not Austen. Sawyer gives the gun back to Seamus, who gives him a knock in the gut with said gun (flashes of Pickett).

As the group gets in the cage, Widmore tells him that they're putting him there for their own good. Widmore asks one of his men if the sonic fence is live yet and the guy says it will be another hour. Widmore says that they don't have an hour because "he's coming," he being Locke.

So how exactly does Widmore seem to have Jacob's list? While he seems very afraid of Locke, it's still unclear exactly what his motives are.

Desmond is now eager to help in original timeline, Sayid kills two men & takes him

When Desmond wakes back up in the original timeline, alive and well, Seamus and Zoe are both shocked, but Charles Widmore doesn't seem surprised at all. A nurse/medic starts to check his condition, but he waves her off, saying he's fine and asking Widmore to help him up.

Widmore tells Desmond he was only unconscious for a few seconds. He then starts to apologize, for putting Desmond through the test, but Desmond stops him, saying it's okay because he understands now. Widmore seems confused, but Desmond seems very zen and asks, "When do we start?"

Zoe and two other men start to walk Desmond through the Hydra Station grounds. She asks him what happened to make him go from beating Widmore about 20 minutes ago to being Mr. Cooperative. He says a lot can happen in 20 minutes. She says that the machine fried his brain. Suddenly, Sayid appears and kills the two other men. He points a gun a Zoe, but tells her to run. Sayid tells Desmond that Widmore's team are dangerous and they need to go. Desmond, Mr. Cooperative, says "lead the way" and follows Sayid.

So what exactly does Desmond now know in this timeline that makes him so zen? Does he know exactly what he needs to do, or is he just going with the flow?

Eloise Hawking scolds Desmond for trying to find Penny

As he's leaving the hospital, Desmond is on the phone with Charles Widmore who berates him for letting Charlie get away. Since Desmond doesn't get what the big deal is, Widmore tells him that he should be the one to tell Mrs. Widmore the bad news.

Desmond arrives at the site of the charity event, and Minkowski wishes Desmond good luck meeting Charles' wife for the first time. We cut to Eloise Hawking, sporting some massive hair, who is scolding some of the catering staff about the placement of butter knives.

When Desmond approaches her, he passes by Daniel Faraday (or Daniel Widmore in this timeline). As Desmond introduces himself to Eloise, she looks flabbergasted, like he's not supposed to be there and this isn't supposed to happen. Desmond tells her that Drive Shaft isn't going to be able to perform and she completely understands and doesn't seem worried about it at all. She says "what happened, happened," one of Daniel's infamous lines from season 5.

As Desmond leaves, he hears two of the event coordinators calling out a list of guests who are attending and he stops cold when he hears the name Penny Milton. He asks to see the list, but Eloise angrily interferes telling him that the list is confidential.

Eloise pulls Desmond aside and tells him to stop what he is doing because someone has clearly affected his way of thinking which is a violation. She says that he needs to stop looking for whatever he is looking for (Penny) because he has what he has always wanted, Charles Widmore's approval. When he questions how she knows what he should do, she says "Because I bloody do." She says he can't see the list because he's "not ready yet."

So what exactly is Desmond not ready for yet and how does Eloise, even in this timeline, know what Desmond should and shouldn't do? Also, her still being alive and off of the island along with Charles in 2004 suggests that the island sank to the bottom of the ocean after the hydrogen bomb detonated since she and Charles were both on the island at the time it was detonated. So once again the question is posed, when and how did the island sink?

Widmore thinks the world of Desmond, has paintings of scale with black & white rocks

Desmond enters Charles Widmore's office in Los Angeles and is met by Widmore with a bit hug.

Once we come back, we see Desmond staring at a model sail boat on Widmore's wall, possibly having a slight memory of his boat in the original timeline. Widmore is on the phone telling someone to get Charlie arraigned and get him out of there.

Widmore tells Desmond that his son is a musician (Daniel Faraday/Widmore) who is playing his wife's (Eloise Hawking/Widmore) charity event with the band Driveshaft. He asks Desmond to keep an eye on Charlie and make sure that he makes it to the event.

Widmore tells Desmond that he has a great life because he has no family, commitments or attachments, but Desmond doesn't seem convinced that it's so great. Widmore then opens a bottle of MacCutcheon's whiskey and shares a shot with Desmond, telling him that "Nothing's too good for you."

So clearly, this entire scenario is backwards. Instead of loathing Desmond and deeming a shot of MacCutcheon's being worth more than his life, Widmore loves Desmond and says nothing is too good for him. And there's so much more to come.

Also, if you look on the wall in Widmore's office, there are two paintings of a scale with black and white rocks on either side. One has a white frame and the other is black. In both of them, the rocks on each side seem fairly balanced.

Electromagnetism moves Desmond's consciousness to sideways timeline

As Simmons' charred body is taken out of the box, Widmore stops to look at him and then proceeds to have his men force Desmond inside. They hit Desmond in the face and then tie him to a chair in the center of the room between the solenoids.

Widmore tells Desmond that he should be fine if everything he's been told about him is true. One guy asks Desmond if he has any keys or changed on him, which he doesn't. Widmore tells Desmond that after this is over, he's going to ask him to make a sacrifice, which prompts Desmond to ask what Widmore knows about sacrifice. Widmore tells Desmond that his son (Daniel) died for the island and that his daughter (Penny) hates him and he's never seen his grandson (Charlie).

Widmore and the other men leave, locking Desmond inside. Desmond freaks out and breaks free from the chair. Inside, Jin demands answers from Widmore. Widmore says Desmond is the only person he knows of that survived a catastrophic electromagnetic event and he needs to know if Desmond can do it again.

Seamus powers up the system, but hesitates in flipping the switch. Widmore comes over and pulls the three levers causing the solenoids in the box to light up. The gauss meter pushes past the maximum reading of 200, the picohertz reaches about 174 and the EMF reading is 242.7958.

Suddenly, as Desmond stands between the solenoids, there is a bright flash and we see the sky shot from the Oceanic 815 window from "LA X." We cut to Desmond standing at the flight status board at LAX.

So Desmond is transported from the main island timeline to the sideways timeline. But what exactly does Widmore have planned on the island if hitting Desmond with a big dose of electromagnetism is just a test for a bigger event later? Presumably, Widmore has heard from someone that Desmond survived the implosion of the Swan Station. Also, what is the sacrifice that Widmore wants Desmond to make? It certainly seems ominous.

Simmons is charred in the electromagnetic device, Widmore doesn't care

After Desmond attacks Widmore, he insists that Zoe start a test, even though she says it's not ready. Jin follows her to the Hydra Station's generator room, passing a makeshift wooden box connected to some heavy duty cables.

Once they're in the generator room, Seamus and many others panic as they prepare to set up the test a day ahead of schedule. Seamus says they need to get a functioning E.M. field. When the generator is turned on, it fails. Seamus sends a man named Simmons outside to the box to check the contacts on the solenoids.

Seamus turns to a white rabbit in a cage that is named Angstrom and tells it that it will be going into the box next. Anders Jonas Ångström was a Swedish physicist who studied terrestial magnetism, light and optical phenomena.

One of the technicians discovers it's a bad breaker and throws the switch as Simmons is inside the box examining the coils. The solenoids emit a bright light and Simmons is tossed across the box. The cameras go out and then the system is powered down. when Jin, Seamus and Zoe arrive at the box, they see the charred remains of Simmons' body.

Charles Widmore comes to the box and is unfazed by Simmons' body. Desmond is brought to the entrance and looks terrified of what could be coming next.

Desmond learns he's back on the island, attacks Widmore

Desmond wakes up in the infirmary on Hydra Island to see Zoe standing over him. Desmond is disoriented, but demands to see Penny. Charles Widmore enters and tells him that Penny and his son Charlie are safe, but he can't see them because he has brought him back to the island.

Upon learning this, you can see rage building inside Desmond who then attacks Charles Widmore with his IV. Charles' head is cut and he leaves the room.

Jin sees photos of Ji Yeon for the first time

At the building housing Room 23 on Hydra Island, Charles Widmore admonishes Zoe for not following the timeline of their plan and taking Jin too soon. She replies that she should have put a mercenary in charge then instead of a geophysicist. He then asks her to go get "the package" from the submarine and take it to the infirmary.

Widmore apologizes to Jin for taking him from the other island. He then gives Jin a digital camera that he says they found on the Ajira plane in Sun's luggage. Jin looks through the pictures on the camera which are of his daughter Ji Yeon with Sun. He has never seen his daughter before this moment, so he's obviously quite emotional. Widmore tells Jin that he has a daughter to and he knows what it's like to be kept apart from her.

Widmore explains to Jin that if the thing that looks like John Locke is allowed to leave the island, that everyone that they care about will cease to be. He asks Jin to come with him so he can show him "the package," which is a who, not a thing.

Locke & Widmore face off at the sonic fence on Hydra Island

Locke reaches Hydra Island alone in a canoe and immediately sees the portable sonic fence set up all the way down the beach. Seamus and other armed members of Widmore's group take shots and Locke and tell him not to move. Locke says that he comes in peace.

They walk up the beach towards the Ajira plane with Locke staying on the ocean side of the fence. Charles Widmore emerges and Locke knows who he is. Widmore reveals that he knows that Locke is obviously not really Locke. He says other than that, all he knows is "myth, ghost stories, and jungle noises." Locke points out that Widmore knows more that he's letting on since he knew to put up the sonic fence pylons.

Widmore denies that he took Jin, causing Locke to repeat Widmore's words from season 5. Locke says "A wise man once said that war was coming to this island, I think it just got here."

So how much does Widmore actually know about the black smoke/Man in Black/Locke? Clearly he knows more than he's letting on, but how much is that? Something tells me this war is going to have a few casualties.

Sawyer makes a deal with Charles Widmore, something is locked in the sub

Sawyer makes his way into the submarine where there is another armed guard. Zoe leads him down a corridor past another guard who is seems to be guarding a room with multiple padlocks on it. Sawyer aks about it, but Zoe tells him it's none of his business.

Sawyer enters the office and Charles Widmore introduces himself and extends his hand, which Sawyer does not shake. When Sawyer says that he knows that Widmore sent the freighter to the island to kill them all. Widmore replies "It's sad, really... how little you actually know." Widmore then tells Sawyer that his team did not kill the Ajira passengers either, but he doesn't expect Sawyer to believe him.

Sawyer tells Widmore that he'll go back to the main island and tell Locke that there was no one on the island as long as the people on his own boat are not harmed and are given safe passage of the island. Widmore agrees to the deal, but seems very skeptical that he can trust Sawyer.

So what is Widmore keeping in the locked room? Is it a person or a thing? Also, what is Widmore's mission on the island? Since his people are setting up the sonic fence, it seems that he wants to keep the smoke monster away, but whose side is he really on?

Charles Widmore returns to the island in a submarine

Just off the island, we see a distant point-of-view shot of the beach camp reunion. Out of the water, a periscope appears. We then see to the point-of-view of the periscope which pans across the beach camp.

Inside the submarine, a man looking through the periscope says that there are people on the beach and asks if they should stop. We see none other than Charles Widmore tell him to proceed as planned.

So what exactly is Charles Widmore doing back at the island and which side in the coming war will he join?

Eloise is pregnant, Jack, Kate and Richard prepare to go to the bomb

At the others/hostiles camp in 1977, Charles Widmore and Richard Alpert are crouched next to Daniel Faraday's body. Widmore says " Why is it that this man looks... familiar to me?" He apparently doesn't clearly remember him from 1954.

Eloise comes over and says that Richard and Erik are coming with her and she says that they can untie Jack and Kate. She asks for a moment with Daniel as she covers him with a blanket and closes his eyes. Eloise says that she's taking them to the bomb. The dialogue is quiet, but Widmore touches her mid-drift and says "I'm worried about you. Not in your condition."

Jack asks Richard who the man is and Richard says that he is Charles Widmore. He continues saying "He and Eloise are... well, let's just say love can be complicated." Jack and Kate share a look after that line. Eloise comes over and says "Let's move out."

We learn here that Eloise is presumably pregnant with Daniel at the time when she killed older Daniel. That's a bit of a weird, no?
